I am often asked about the tools of the trade that home cooks should have in their kitchens. Although I probably have far too many pieces of equipment in my kitchen, the list below features the tried and true items I reach for over and over again.

I recommend purchasing the best quality you can, which does not necessarily mean the most expensive. I shop for deals whenever possible! Before making a purchase, take a few minutes to research recommendations. Cooks Illustrated, Consumer Reports and some of the food websites (Food & Wine, The Kitchn, etc.) do a good job of testing and reviewing all sorts of kitchen equipment and are good resources. Next, consider the following:

  • how you will use the equipment and if it provides for more than one application (such as a Dutch oven)
  • its weight and feel (such as a knife or fry pan handle in your hand)
  • where you will store it
  • the quality of materials and construction
  • ease of cleaning

With careful purchasing, these pieces will serve you well for many, many years!
